150 years looks good on you, Hillsboro! If you’re already planning to head out to the farmers market this Saturday, pop on over to Hillsboro’s 150 year anniversary as well. There will be a boat load of entertainment, activities, booths, and Hillsboro pride. Here’s to the next 150, Hillsboro!

Friday, October 16

  • West Slope Bookish Pumpkin Decorating Contest ✅
    all day, West Slope Community Library, Portland

    Help decorate the library for spooky season by decorating a pumpkin as your favorite book or book character using paint, glue, glitter, and more. No carving or cutting allowed. A limited supply of pumpkins will be available, or you can bring your own. Return your decorated pumpkin October 16 to 23, then vote for your favorite October 23 to 30. The winner will receive a library swag bag and be announced October 31.
  • Winter Dreams Summer Gardens Symposium
    9am-4pm, online

    October 16th, 17th, 23rd, and 24th spend four days immersed in virtual garden seminars led by 16 presenters, with expert tips to help you plan next year’s garden and learn about gardening in the Rogue Valley. Oregon landscapers can use the classes for continuing education credits. Attend from home via Zoom, choose your favorite topics or watch them all, with recordings available for a limited time.
  • Cedar Mill Puzzlers ✅

    Get ready for Halloween at the Community Costume Closet, offering free costumes for all ages thanks to generous community donations. Costumes are free to take, though a $5 donation is suggested to help support the effort. Find your perfect costume at one of the upcoming pop-up locations.
  • Department Diaries: Hillsboro Storytime Edition ✅

    Join Mayor Pace for a special community storytime exploring the history of Hillsboro. This is the fourth and final event in a four-part Storytime series celebrating Hillsboro’s 150th anniversary and highlighting the people and departments that help the city thrive.
  • The Woman In Black
    7:30pm, The Vault Theater, Hillsboro

    Bag&Baggage presents The Woman in Black, Stephen Mallatratt’s chilling stage adaptation of Susan Hill’s celebrated ghost story. Set in a remote English village, the play follows a young lawyer uncovering the secrets of a recently deceased client and the vengeful presence that stands in his way. Just two actors portray all the characters in this atmospheric and relentless Halloween production.
  • Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None
    7:30pm, Experience Theatre Project, Aloha

    Step into an immersive adaptation of Agatha Christie’s classic mystery, where ten guests and their hosts are stranded in a remote seaside mansion after a violent storm. When a gramophone recording accuses each guest of wrongdoing, secrets, suspicion, and fear take over as the deaths begin. You’ll be seated inside the house among the bedrooms, dining room, and narrow passages, close enough to hear whispered confrontations and private confessions. The audience remains strictly non-participatory, observing the action as silent witnesses without being addressed or asked to participate.

Featuring favorites like “The Unbirthday Song” and “Painting the Roses Red,” plus new songs from the 2010 live-action film.
  • Seffarine: Abaraz

    Seffarine returns to The Reser with Abaraz, or “Gateway to the Sahara,” a multimedia concert inspired by the group’s journey to Mhamid, an oasis town on the southern edge of Morocco. Live music, immersive film, and storytelling trace musical connections between Morocco, the Sahara, West Africa, Andalusia, and flamenco, with original music from Seffarine and guest artists from Morocco, Spain, Tunisia, and New York City.

    Composer Hyo-Won Woo’s Creo, inspired by the Creation story from Genesis, opens the season in a special collaboration with Portland Youth Philharmonic’s Camerata. Drawing on Korean musical traditions alongside the full power of a classical chorus and orchestra, the work explores the convictions that shape our strength, identity, and shared humanity. Woo will be in residence to speak with audiences about her music, with the program presented in partnership with the Korean American Coalition, Oregon Chapter.
  • Gabe Hess – Live Music ✅

    Spend an evening with Pacific Northwest singer-songwriter Gabe Hess, whose music blends smooth R&B, classic soul, and heartfelt storytelling.
